Karen Edwards

Conservation Photographer

Hi, I’m Karen, a Conservation Photographer and Washington State Master Naturalist. My home base is the Inland Northwest.

I am a storyteller who moves beyond the niche of wildlife photography. I create photographs to educate, and inspire people to value and advocate for restoring biodiversity, protecting what remains, and encouraging others to join in.

I believe it is possible to design a world where humans coexist with nature.

You can check out my work here.

Latest Work

I work and volunteer with my local Land Trusts. Land Trusts are an invaluable tool for habitat conservation, promoting stewardship, leading restoration projects, and connecting people to the landscapes they call home.

Recently, I provided photography services to the Okanogan Land Trust who used my photographs in their capital campaign “For The FEN”. These images helped secure the $1.5 million necessary to purchase the land, which is now protected from future development and will be restored. Use this tool to find local Land Trusts near you! It’s fun to help out, I promise!

I also volunteer with the Spokane Audubon Society and have been featured in their fundraising calendars.

Presently, I am helping with their common loon project.

Latest From the Field

Adventuring outside with my camera is when I am the happiest. With my camera in hand, I tend to slow down and take the time to notice more closely what I am seeing. I find myself completely engaged in my efforts, almost like a meditation. Hours pass like minutes.

My blog, Field Notes, is an opportunity for me to share my experiences and photography with you.

workshops

While some people figure out they love photography early, others come at it later in life (typically when they can afford camera gear!). Fortunately, life allows us to have multiple passions, yet there’s only so much time in a day to pursue them.

I have taught myself through online classes, programs, books, and tutorials, which has required a huge investment in time at the computer and in the field. This can also become costly as we buy items it turns out we didn’t need as much as we thought.

Despite hours on youtube and field trials, the most growth I have experienced has come from in-person workshops.

If you’re noticing your progress slowing as a photographer, please reach out to me.

I am available for private tutoring in person or through Zoom. I can help you create the images you are envisioning, process your images the way you image them, plan photo stories, or even help you make that switch from Auto to Manual.

If you have an idea for a workshop you don’t see here, I’m all ears. I love to travel and see new places, especially with other photographers!
